Yesterday I downloaded the standalone converter from filehorse.com and converted my old XP system to a VM. I will find out if it works in a few hours when the copy is done. I followed the instructions here: -your-existing-windows-xp-system-into-a-virtual-machine/ and so far so good. I also found out that even though my XP system is old, the latest converter still worked.

VMWare's vCenter Converter Standalone, which we'll use here, is available for free. However, to download it, you will have to register at VMware's site. We won't cover the registration process since it's pretty straightforward.

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone is a free application that can be downloaded from the VMware website and installed on Windows for converting supported types of machines to VMware virtual machines. The VMware vCenter Converter Standalone featured in this blog post is called Standalone because it can be installed on the operating system of a custom machine. There are two other types of VMware Converter which are not currently supported:

VMware Converter (VMware standalone converter), now known as VMware vCenter converter Standalone, is a tool used in VMware vSphere environments to convert physical and virtual machines to VMware virtual machines, using the VMware Converter for P2V process. You can also use VMware Converter to perform V2V (virtual to virtual) conversions to convert virtual machines running in one type of virtual environment to another virtual machine. For the purposes of the post, we will refer to it simply as VMware Converter.

Different VMware converter ports are required for communication, depending on the conversion of a Windows or Linux host. Also, compared to the ports required for vmware converter p2v, V2V operations require fewer ports.

As mentioned at the outset when many of us began working with the tool, it was called VMware Converter. You may have seen it listed as vCenter converter standalone or standalone VMware converter. I remember working with VMware Converter 3.x and still looking for the download even just a few years ago as it was the only version that could successfully convert some of the legacy servers still running in some data centers such as Windows Server 2003.

Additionally, with all the security vulnerabilities now targeting VMware solutions and applications, VMware is also helping to ensure customers do not open themselves up to future vulnerabilities or exploits by running vCenter Converter in their data centers. This pulling of VMware vCenter Converter includes VMware Converter standalone and VMware vCenter converter standalone.
